Inside the Teacher’s Mind: Podcast 2 With Bethan Hawley

Ever wondered why teachers do what they do in the classroom?

In Inside the Teacher’s Mind, I observe classes, take notes, and then sit down with the teacher to explore their classroom decisions.

We tackle questions like:

  • How can we motivate our students?
  • What’s the right balance between teacher- and student-led activities?
  • How can we use technology effectively in teaching?

For EAP and subject teachers in university, this podcast is the next best thing to peer observation, with insights you can apply to your own teaching.

This week your host Nick Maxwell is joined by Bethan Hawley.

Join me as we step inside the teacher’s mind.

  1. Thank you for creating this, Nick! It was really well produced and it’s always great to hear about the choices that others make in the classroom – as you say, it’s the next best thing to peer observation. It was lovely to hear Bethan talk about her teaching – her enthusiasm is contagious. Please keep these podcasts coming!

  2. Thanks Nick and Bethan for sharing this conversation 🙂 As an EAP teacher, it was interesting to me to hear about Bethan’s experiences as a subject teacher. It seems some aspects of subject teaching, such as the focus on exams and the interest that students have in the topic itself, mean that students might be more motivated in subject classes than EAP classes. I think there are things that I can ‘steal’ from Bethan though that could help with this in my class, such as making sure I have a quick start to the class and consistently directing students back to previous classes before I ‘re-teach’ things that have already been covered. It’s great to hear teachers’ talk about their everyday classroom practice because it reminds me of strategies like this which I maybe sometimes forget about a bit. Thanks both!
